“The people that I liked and had not met went to the big cafes because they were lost in them and no one noticed them and they could be alone in them and be together.”

I took this photo for a client visiting New York, and something about it really makes me think of this image by Lorca Dicorcia. I know that the subject matter of Dicorcia’s photo gives a totally different spin to the image, but when taken solely for the image itself I get a sense of freedom from it. I tried to mimic a similar layout to his photo, and to capture that sense of freedom and awe that I get from Dicorcia’s image.

“The face is the mirror of the mind, and eyes without speaking confess the secrets of the heart.” -St Jerome

The interplay between dark and light is what first interested me in this photo, but it was the slight sense of danger that that I tried to emulate in the image. I tried to emulate some of the visual techniques used in Dicorcia’s image, and believe that it was a fairly successful attempt.

Sometimes life just catches up to you, and the only thing you can do is take some time out to yourself to think. Finding those moments in our day to day lives to reflect are of paramount importance, whether you do it on the bus, at a fast food restaurant, or laying on your bed.
