Comparison 1

This is probably my favorite image that I have created.  It is definitely the one that has garnered the most attention.  I have won multiple competitions with it, and it has paid for the camera gear that I am currently using.  I believe that it is my most Dicorcia looking photo.  Something about the composition and expressions on the peoples faces makes me think of his style.

I think more than anything it is the colors that drew me to this picture.  I think it is a very fun feeling image, especially with the woman being on the older side.  I just tried to create an image that has a sense of fun in it, something that would make me smile similarly to the way Dicorcia’s makes me.

When a friend calls to me from the road
And slows his horse to a meaning walk,
I don’t stand still and look around
On all the hills I haven’t hoed,
And shout from where I am, ‘What is it?’
No, not as there is a time to talk.
I thrust my hoe in the mellow ground,
Blade-end up and five feet tall,
And plod: I go up to the stone wall
For a friendly visit.

Comparison 5

One of the things I wish I had more confidence to do is use flash in my street photography.  The sense of drama in Dicorcia’s image is so palpable, and that is almost entirely down to his use of flash.  One of the things that I most wish that I could afford to have for my photography is a huge collection of lighting options.  Nothing gives a photo that cinematic look more than a dramatic use of light.

Comparison 6

I think what made me place these photos together is the fact that I feel like we are intruding on a private moment.  I get the sense from both of these images that we don’t belong.  I think that the uncomfortable nature of Dicorcia’s image is something that the woman walking in the door perfectly encapsulates.

Comparison 7

This photo was a complete luck shot, I was practicing hip shooting with a new camera and was still not sure what I was doing.  This shot was a happy accident.  I think that my photo juxtaposes the physical strength of the gentleman in Dicorcia’s photo, with a sense of inner strength.

“Every great dream begins with a dreamer. Always remember, you have within you the strength, the patience, and the passion to reach for the stars to change the world.”           -Harriet Tubman

From childhood’s hour I have not been
As others were—I have not seen
As others saw—I could not bring
My passions from a common spring—
From the same source I have not taken
My sorrow—I could not awaken
My heart to joy at the same tone—
And all I lov’d—I lov’d alone—
Then—in my childhood—in the dawn
Of a most stormy life—was drawn
From ev’ry depth of good and ill
The mystery which binds me still—
From the torrent, or the fountain—
From the red cliff of the mountain—
From the sun that ’round me roll’d
In its autumn tint of gold—
From the lightning in the sky
As it pass’d me flying by—
From the thunder, and the storm—
And the cloud that took the form
(When the rest of Heaven was blue)
Of a demon in my view—

The stress and tension in this photo is what drew my attention to it.  I captured the above image on 6th avenue at 11am, and I was blown away by the number of people who were walking around looking unbelievably stressed.  So in the words of David Mamet,
“We must have a pie. Stress cannot exist in the presence of a pie.”

Some people hate the mundane tasks that we have to perform in life.  Personally I look forward to tasks that I can automate, it gives me time to separate my mind and body.  My body does the task through habit, and my mind is completely free.  I find that my mind is constantly multitasking, so when an activity comes up where I don’t have to think about it at all, it is a blessed relief to turn my brain off and let it wander.
